Are you a student or recent graduate searching for meaningful internships that align with your career goals? The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) offers a fantastic chance to gain real-world experience through its Pathways Internship Program. Designed to connect students to paid positions within the Bureau and Tribal Nations across the U.S., this program blends hands-on learning with impactful projects. With opportunities to earn valuable experience and the potential for full-time jobs after graduation, this internship could be the launching pad for your public service career.

Whether you’re currently enrolled in college or recently graduated, this program offers dynamic roles that will help you grow professionally while contributing to vital projects in the Indian Affairs sector.

Program Overview:

The BIA’s Pathways Internship is a unique opportunity for students to work as Student Trainees and be part of work that supports Tribal Nations. Internships are available across various departments within the BIA. Through this program, interns gain insight into federal government and Tribal partnerships while engaging in impactful work such as overseeing and managing Indian Trust Lands.

This is more than just a job—it’s a chance to make a difference while gaining key skills and experience.

Available Positions

The internship covers a wide range of fields, with priority given to roles in the following disciplines:

  • Forestry
  • Natural Resources Management
  • Wildland Fire Management
  • Real Estate
  • Environmental Science
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Agriculture & Rangeland Management
  • Civil & Petroleum Engineering
  • Climate Science and Bison Management

These positions allow students to earn work experience while making meaningful contributions to projects that support the Indian community. Interns often rotate through assignments, exposing them to different specialties and tasks.

Responsibilities

As a Pathways Student Trainee, an intern’s responsibilities include:

  • Receiving on-the-job training to develop skills for entry-level positions.
  • Working closely with mentors who are experts in their field.
  • Participating in developmental assignments to broaden knowledge of the BIA’s mission and activities.
  • Learning about the relationship between Tribal Nations and the federal government.

Interns will receive both formal training and hands-on experience, preparing them for future careers either within the Bureau or affiliated Tribal Nations.

Applicant Requirements

This program has specific eligibility criteria that applicants must meet:

General Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Actively enrolled or accepted for full-time enrollment (12 credit hours or more) in an accredited institution.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Academic Requirements by Grade Level

The Education requirements are tiered based on where you are in your studies:

  • GS-2 Level: Completion of high school or a GED diploma.
  • GS-3 Level: Completion of one academic year of post-high school studies.
  • GS-4 Level: Completion of two years of post-high school study or an associate degree.

Interns must also be pursuing a degree related to the fields of study connected to their role. Meeting these qualifications ensures that interns are well-equipped to excel in their internship assignments.

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass a security background check.
  • Should meet Indian Preference guidelines (BIA Form 4432 required for eligibility consideration).

This program specifically encourages applicants with Tribal affiliations and Native American and Alaskan Native students to apply.

Salary and Benefits

Interns in the Pathways Program are compensated under Federal Pay Grade schedules. While pay rates vary depending on your grade level and location, beginners typically start at the GS-2 to GS-4 levels (Step 1) on the pay scale. Salary tables are regularly updated and include geographic adjustments based on cost of living.

Additional benefits of the program include:

  • The potential for noncompetitive conversion to a full-time position after completing the program.
  • Flexible work schedules tailored to educational commitments, including leave-without-pay (LWOP) options during academic terms.
  • Career-building guidance and mentorship.

Keep in mind that relocation expenses are not covered. Telework options may also be available, based on supervisor approval.

Why Participate?

This internship offers more than just experience—it provides a chance to give back to Tribal communities and gain a deeper understanding of intergovernmental collaboration. The skills you’ll develop—data analysis, technical expertise, communication, and teamwork—are invaluable for careers in both public service and the private sector.

Plus, the program offers promotion potential for interns who excel in their roles and remain in good academic standing, giving you a head start in your career.

Applying for the BIA Pathways Internship Program is a straightforward process. Here’s how to begin:

Step 1: Gather Required Documents
