Looking for a meaningful way to jumpstart your career while gaining hands-on experience? The Department of the Army Pathways Internship Program offers an incredible opportunity for students and recent graduates to build the foundation for a fulfilling career. This program is designed to provide specialized training and development, preparing individuals for permanent employment with the Department of the Army.

If you’re a motivated student, eager to learn, and ready to serve your community, this internship could be the perfect step toward achieving your professional goals.

Program Overview:

Currently, the program offers internship opportunities for Firefighter Trainees, giving participants the chance to develop skills and gain familiarity with the role in a real-world setting. Duties are designed to become more involved as knowledge and capabilities grow, and at the full-performance level, participants will:

  • Assist with firefighting efforts, including controlling and extinguishing fires.
  • Perform maintenance and decontamination tasks for tools and equipment.
  • Deliver basic first aid to injured or sick individuals.
  • Operate firefighting equipment such as pumps, foam generators, hoses, and nozzles.

This role is not just a job—it’s a chance to protect lives, property, and the environment while developing critical life skills.

Internship Requirements

To qualify for this exciting opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Eligibility

  • Be a current student enrolled at least half-time in an accredited high school, college, technical, vocational, or trade school.
  • Students pursuing relevant degrees (such as Fire Science) are encouraged to apply.

Specific Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify Selective Service registration.
  • Must pass a background investigation, pre-employment drug screening, and physical examination.
  • Be available to work 24-hour rotating shifts, totaling 72 hours a week.
  • Maintain good academic standing and a qualifying GPA.

For those studying outside the U.S., education credentials must be evaluated for equivalence.

Experience and Skills

This internship aims to train future firefighters; therefore, experience in mechanical operations, emergency services, or hazardous materials handling is beneficial but not required. Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Strong teamwork abilities.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
  • Willingness to learn and take on physically demanding tasks.

Additionally, any prior experience in fire suppression or first aid services will be a plus.

Salary and Benefits

  • Interns will be paid based on the GS-04 level, with increases possible as training and educational milestones are completed.
  • Progression through to the GS-07 level is possible after successful completion of program requirements and academic goals.
  • Additional benefits may include relocation incentives, student loan repayment, and eligibility for permanent positions.

This internship not only pays financially but also offers benefits in skills development, professional exposure, and future career opportunities within the federal service.

How the Internship Works

The Pathways Internship follows a step-by-step training system to help students transition to professional firefighters post-graduation. Key highlights include:

  1. Hands-On Training
Trainees will engage in live fire drills, rescue scenarios, and hazardous material control under the guidance of experienced mentors.

  2. Academic Integration
This program strikes a balance between your coursework and professional responsibilities, ensuring your education remains a priority.

  3. Career Pathway
After completing 640 internship hours and meeting required academic qualifications, participants are eligible for conversion into competitive service positions within 120 days of graduation.

How to Apply

The application process is straightforward but requires attention to detail. Follow these steps to ensure your interest is considered:

  1. Prepare Your Documentation

    • Update your resume with relevant skills and educational achievements.
    • Upload official transcripts showing enrollment in a qualifying program. International students must submit evaluated credentials.
  2. Submit Before the Deadline

    • Ensure all documents are attached and your application is complete before submission.
  3. Track Your Status

    • Check the status of your application through the USAJOBS portal.

Additional Information

Interns must:

  • Commit to 640 hours of service and at least 10 weeks of employment.
  • Meet all academic and performance requirements outlined in the agency agreement.
  • Successfully demonstrate skills during the internship to qualify for permanent positions.
